oh hey there – its part of my face. ha! I’ve really been digging dressing for fall lately.

Challenging myself to get READY each day a little bit more. I really feel like I’ve let myself go – and its amazing how good it feels to LOOK good. I feel more confident, sexy, daring…
Fun fact: I actually like being crafty and artsy fartsy sometimes..I haven’t drawn or anything like that in SO long! SO i made a homemade cart this past week just for fun…and it felt good to reconnect…just kinda zone out and draw. I hope she likes it…
Another thing I LOOOVVEE to do is bake. Especially cookies. I’m sure you have that figured out by now! B and his friends are headed on a hunting trip this weekend and it gives me a chance to do some cookie making! The secret to amazing cookies is a few things actually – good brand of flour, make sure your eggs are room temp, use unsalted butter, let the dough chill overnight in the fridge (or at LEAST a couple hours), line your baking sheet with parchment paper, take them out of the oven BEFORE they look done (they will finish baking on the sheet) –

what other cookie tips do you have to add? Do you like to bake too?

Last weekend we went out to the lake with B’s dad. It felt good to be “off the map.” no tv. no internet. I got lots of reading done…watched a few movies, drank a few beers and cooked for the men! Seriously…this stuff is delish! Daily sunshine is supposed to be a sneaky way to get kids an extra serving of veggies. But I like to drinks it! Can’t decide if I like chocolate or strawberry banana better… All you do is add the powder to ice and water and shake it up. Which flavor would you try?
Vegan. Gluten free. Dairy free pancakes. You would think they would be nasty. But they are my freaking FAV. and check out the flufffff….

Isn’t this gorgeous? bonfire from last weekend and that sucker was HOT. The boys cut down SO much brush, branches and trees out at the lake! Those hot coals look PERFECT for roasting marshmallows!
Speaking of margaritas. Oh wait. ha! I really like this mix! It is still pretty sweet, but definitely less sweet and more tolerable then a regular marg! I like mixed fruity drinks like margaritas and mojitos but i’m usually the weird one requesting less sweet….anyone else do that?? Otherwise..GUT ROT.
Last weekend was going a little bit stir crazy…and I realized that I had downloaded a workout onto my BOD app. 35 minutes of cardio from the Shift Shop. NO data required to get in a good workout. It was INCREDIBLY windy and I didn’t want to go for a run in it… so I went out in the yard a pushed play! Was fun!
meal from the week: Alaskan Salmon, Roasted Crack Broccoli and homemade hash browns! I LOVE salmon and we are so lucky that B’s uncle lives in Alaska and can send us some as fresh as it gets! I put some melted cheese on some of the broccoli just for B – if you want any of this in a recipe form let me know!
To be honest I forgot I had this stuff! I LOVE the seasonings from Flavor Gods. Among my favs are spicy everything, lemon and garlic, everything spice, chocolate donut, garlic everything and pizza. They have a ton of others too. Lately I’ve been sprinkling this one on the top of my nespresso coffee! Do you have any favorite seasonings? Have you ever tried topping your cappuccino with cinnamon? SO GOOD too!
I really have been loving the Potato Company trio potatoes from Costco! I just slice them in half, drizzle with olive oil and a sprinkle of seasoning and roast at 430 for about 20-25 minutes until soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Such an easy side.
 I’ve been reading the Compound Effect by Darren Hardy – I have read it in the past and it was time to get it out again. The book is based on the philosophy that every little thing you do each day either brings you CLOSER to your goal or farther away. So by doing seemingly small positive actions CONSISTENTLY OVER TIME you will eventually hit your goal! Let’s say you have the goal to run a 5k, but right now you are SUPER out of shape. Find a one mile loop and WALK it three times a week for three weeks. After that try jogging a blog and walking a block until you complete it (staying at 3 times a week). Keep increasing until you can run the whole loop! Then work on doing more than one loop. By consistently doing these actions you will eventually run a 5k and much more!

A few of the girls that are on my coaching team are reading it along with me. At the end of each chapter are some reflection questions which we have been doing together too! We share our thoughts in an app for accountability and can have a running discussion. By just taking a FEW MINUTES each day of doing this I have found my mindset to be so much clearer. And like I said just a few minutes each day helps me to eventually conquer the entire book! Have you read the compound effect? Would you like to join the book club too?

Sharing … Things About Me

1. I’m a “whoops baby” – but maybe you knew that already – I have two older sisters that are 15 and 20 years older than me. I always joke that my parents just wanted to keep trying until they got “perfection”  ha! But for real, my mom was 42 when I was born so that had to be a shock when she found out she was pregnant! My parents definitely thought they were done raising babies…and then there was me! So I was definitely raised by parents of a different generation and my sisters got to be like other moms too. I’ve even been an auntie since I was five years old.

2. I was born with a congenital heart defect known as a Ventricular Septal Defect. This was detected as an infant when they heard a “murmur” at one of my appointments when I was an infant. If you listen to a person’s heart you normally hear two distinct parts of the heart beating – mine sounds more like a “WHOOSHING” sound – it’s SUPER loud and prominent and I joke that there is a washing machine in there! A Ventricular Septal Defect means that there is a small hole in the wall between the bottom two chambers of my heart. The smaller the hole, the louder the murmur. When I was a baby they had to do an angiogram to make sure everything else looked ok. What that means is that they insert a small IV catheter into the vein near your groin and take a small camera up to your heart and look at it – I have never needed open heart surgery or a less invasive type of procedure to close the hole. I’m SUPER blessed! I was followed closely by a cardiologist as a pediatric patient and now since it is stable I just go back each year for a test to make sure it looks the same and has not grown or moved. Many patients that have this experience shortness of breath and are very restricted in their activities. I’m SO BLESSED that I have NOT had this to hold me back in any physical activity in my life thus far and makes me SO GRATEFUL to use the body that I have!

3. I was an extremely stubborn and independent child growing up and this often lead to head butting with my very stubborn dad! ha! I was BOUND AND DETERMINED to do it my way. (sorry Dad) – My parents were very old fashioned (which I”m sure grateful for) so when it came to curfews, getting a cell phone, etc – I was definitely a negotiating child and I’m sure very responsible for some of those gray hairs of his. But now it’s ironic because my dad and I are so much alike! We both have SUCH an interest and passion for business and personal development, realize the importance of physical activity and nutrition (and SO WISH others would too!!!) and both have that entrepreneurial mindset.  Also I’m learning more and more each day that I got my ability to LOVE caring for others from him. He is the caretaker and his way of showing love is just figuring it out and providing. “It’s already been done” attitude. Blessed.

​4. When people ask me why I became a nurse I don’t really have a good answer. It’s like I just had an instinct to do it? If that even makes sense? In our very small town there wasn’t much for jobs available, but I know I wanted one when I turned 16. A few other girls in my high school and I did the CNA (Certified Nurses Aide) class and worked at the local nursing home taking care of the residents there. I worked there from the time I was 16 through my freshman year of college (I worked over my first summer home and then worked over some holidays and weekends too. It is HARD work… physically AND emotionally. The physical in the lifting, running around, turning patient – and doing it all EFFICIENTLY and SAFELY. It’s also very emotional work – maintaining dignity for these patients that can’t do anything on their own and making and maintaining trust and relationships with those that are VERY aware of their situation. Graduating high school and becoming a nurse was just what I felt called to do. So I did it. Graduated high school from a class of 34 (yes, 34) and went to North Dakota State University to pursue nursing. It is a COMPETITIVE and VERY REPUTABLE program but I did it. Got accepted after my first year and finished my degree (with a job prior to graduation) in four years total. – At the ripe age of 21 years and 2 weeks old.

5.  My first job as an RN was in Cardiac ICU and I was there for a little over 2 years. Talk about diving in head first. New grad in an ICU taking care of super sick patient. Patients that are FRESH from their open heart surgeries. Patient requiring ventilators, machines that help pump their heart, machines that do the work of their kidneys continuously, requiring multiple medications to keep their blood pressure high enough to get blood flow to their brain and throughout their body. I saw tragedy in drug overdose, sudden cardiac arrest, people drinking themselves to death, tragic accidents – parents having to say goodbye to their kids, kids having to say goodbye to their parents and watching them take their last breath.  I’ve done CPR that ended in a happy ending and I’ve had to quit doing CPR because it was time for it to end differently. I celebrated with patients and families for their first time getting up to the chair, walking down the hall for the first time in weeks and I’ve seen the miraculous recovery that open heart patients make in just a few short hours.  SO heartbreaking but so many moments of REWARD that made it worth it.

So why did I leave something I loved?

Panic attacks. Stress. Flipping back and forth between 12 hour day and night shifts sometimes with just 24 hours in between. I constantly felt hungover. I couldn’t give my all to my patients, my loved ones personally or even give anything to myself. The panic attacks were the worst. Feeling like I couldn’t catch my breath for days. Feeling like I had an elephant sitting on my chest. I was CONSTANTLY worried what my next assignment would be and worries I would do something wrong and worried about EVERY SINGLE patient on the unit because I felt responsible to take care of them too. I hated not sleeping… like ever. Getting home after a night shift at 8:30 am and crawling into bed only to toss and turn until 11:30 am and then finally give up and get up is NOT healthy for days on end.

So I made a change. And now here I am. Four years later in the PACU …
